Method 1: Use your Apple ID to reset your Mac’s password

When you type in the incorrect user password for the third time, you will be given the option to restart your computer in order to access the password recovery features. After the computer restarts, you will then be prompted to enter your Apple ID, choose the user account for which you want to reset the password, and finally, input a new password.

Method 2: Use another admin account to unlock your Mac

Generally, the person who is the first to set up the Mac is given an admin account by default, but you can always verify it by logging into your account, going to System Preferences > Users & Groups, and checking the list of user accounts on your Mac. The type of account will be mentioned just below the username, so if it says “Admin,” then you can reset the passwords of other users.
To perform this action, go to the same Users & Groups window, click the lock icon, and enter your admin login and password when asked. After that, click on the user whose password you want to reset and then hit the button marked Reset. After this, you only need to stick to the directions mentioned on the screen.
